Optimize Performance While Using SMAA
Why SMAA Is Lightweight
SMAA 1x is designed to run on older systems because it only processes edge detection, not full-screen effects. You should see minimal frame rate impact compared to unfiltered gameplay.
Checking Your Frame Rate
Enable the FPS counter (F3 key by default) and note your baseline frames. Enable SMAA and observe the counter again. A well-configured SMAA setup adds less than 5 FPS cost on most hardware.
Balancing Quality and Speed
If you notice significant frame drops:
- Lower the SMAA intensity setting
- Use the 1x preset instead of higher quality modes
- Disable SMAA temporarily to confirm it's the cause
- Check that other demanding shaders or mods aren't running simultaneously
System Considerations
On very old GPUs, even SMAA 1x may cause noticeable lag. In that case, disable it and rely on vanilla rendering. SMAA shines on mid-range systems where the performance cost is negligible but the visual improvement is clear.
