Create a Custom Tooltip Theme from Scratch

Setting Up Your Theme File

Tooltip themes in Simply Tooltips are data-driven, meaning you define them in JSON configuration files. Start by navigating to your mod's config folder and locating the tooltips directory. Create a new JSON file for your theme—name it something descriptive like my_custom_theme.json.

Defining Theme Properties

Your theme file should specify:

  • Background color and texture – the base appearance of the tooltip box
  • Text color and font styling – how item names and descriptions display
  • Border style – optional edges or outlines
  • Padding and spacing – how much room text has inside the tooltip
  • Item icon position – where the item picture appears relative to text

Assigning Items to Your Theme

Once your theme is defined, link it to specific items using their registry names. You can target individual items, entire mod namespaces, or use wildcards to apply your theme broadly. Test your theme in-game by hovering over assigned items—if the tooltip doesn't appear as expected, check your JSON syntax and file paths for errors.
