How to Manage Backup Storage and Clean Up Old Simple Backups
Understanding Automatic Cleanup
Simple Backups does not keep every backup forever. Two limits control cleanup: a maximum number of stored backups and a maximum total folder size. When either limit is exceeded, the oldest backups are deleted first. This means you rarely need to clean up manually — the mod rotates files on its own as new backups are created.
Reducing Disk Usage
If backups are eating too much space, open config/simplebackups-common.toml and lower the maximum folder size or the maximum backup count. You can also lengthen the backup interval so fewer snapshots are produced. Larger worlds with many mods generate bigger backups, so tune these values to match your available disk space.
Manual Cleanup
To free space immediately, close the game and open the simplebackups folder in your instance directory. Delete the oldest backup subfolders by hand, keeping the most recent ones you care about. Never delete the folder while the game is running, since a backup may be in progress. After cleanup, confirm the remaining backups still open correctly by restoring one in a test world if you want peace of mind.
