How to Parry Fireballs with a Sword Instead of a Shield

Sword Parrying Basics

Besides shields, you can still parry fireballs by hitting them with your sword. This is the classic technique many players already use against blazes and ghasts, and the Shield Parry Mod keeps it working alongside the new shield parry mechanic.

To parry a fireball with a sword:

1. Face the incoming fireball and hold your sword ready.

2. Swing at the fireball as it approaches, aiming your crosshair directly at it.

3. Time the swing so the sword's hitbox intersects the fireball. A successful hit deflects the fireball back in the direction you are facing.

4. Use the deflected fireball offensively — a returned blaze fireball or ghast fireball can damage the mob that fired it.

When to Use Sword vs Shield

Sword parrying requires precise aim and timing but lets you keep your off-hand free and works while you are attacking. Shield parrying is more forgiving because the shield covers a wider area and the parry window is generous, especially with Rebound. Against rapid fireball volleys from blazes, a shield with Rebound is usually safer. Against a single ghast fireball you want to redirect, a sword swing gives you more control over the return direction. Practice both so you can switch based on the fight.
