Understand Config File Formats and Choose the Right One
Common Config Formats
Shadow Config Mod supports multiple file formats, each with different strengths:
JSON — Clean, widely compatible, good for simple settings
TOML — Human-readable with clear sections, great for organized configs
YAML — Compact and flexible, uses indentation for structure
Which Format Should You Use?
The mod that created the config file determines its format—you don't choose. Shadow Config Mod simply reads and preserves whatever format the mod uses. If a mod supports multiple formats, its documentation will explain which to use.
Reading Your Config Format
- JSON: Look for
{brackets and"quotes"around names - TOML: Organized into
[sections]withkey = valuepairs - YAML: Uses colons and indentation; no brackets needed
When editing, maintain the exact format. Changing a JSON file's structure or breaking YAML indentation will cause Shadow Config Mod to flag errors. The mod's built-in comments explain each setting regardless of format.
