How to Tell Which Mod Added a Specific Villager Profession

The Shift Trick

The mod's most underrated feature is the mod ID display. When the profession list is open in REI, hold Shift. The name of each profession gains a prefix showing the mod ID that registered it. Vanilla professions show the vanilla identifier, while modded ones show their own namespace.

Why This Matters in a Modpack

Large modpacks often add several villager-related mods at once. Two mods might add similarly named professions, or a profession might sound vanilla but actually come from a content mod. Seeing the mod ID removes the guesswork. It also helps when troubleshooting: if a profession's workstation is missing from your world, you now know which mod to check for config or registry issues.

Reading the List Correctly

  • Keep Shift held while you scroll; releasing it hides the IDs again.
  • The ID appears before the profession name, so read left to right.
  • If you see an unfamiliar namespace, that is the mod responsible for the profession and its workstation requirement.

Combining With Workstation Info

Because each row also shows the required workstation, you get both pieces of information at once: what the profession is, which mod owns it, and which block a villager must claim to take that job. That makes this the single best screen for planning a modded trading hall.
