How to Find Out Which Workstation a Villager Profession Needs

Using the Uses Key on an Emerald

Hold an emerald in your hand (or just have it anywhere in your inventory in most setups) and press the REI Uses key, which defaults to U. A REI panel opens listing every villager profession the game currently knows about, including professions added by other mods. Each entry shows the profession name alongside the workstation block that villager needs to claim that job.

Reading the Results

Scan the list for the profession you care about — for example, a librarian entry will point you to the lectern, a weaponsmith to the grindstone, and so on. Because the mod pulls from the live registry, modded professions appear here too, not just vanilla ones. If you are unsure whether an entry comes from vanilla or from another mod, hold Shift while the list is open: the mod ID is displayed in front of the profession name so you can tell exactly which mod registered it.

Practical Tips

  • Use this before building a trading hall so you place the correct workstation for each villager you want.
  • If a profession you expected is missing, the mod adding it may not be loaded, or it may not register a workstation at all.
  • Combine this with the villager spawn egg method if you want to check professions without carrying an emerald.
