Optimize Lighting in Caves and Dark Areas

Understand Cave Lighting Mechanics

Rev's Better Shaders applies smooth lighting effects to dark areas automatically. However, you can adjust how aggressively this smoothing works through the shader settings. Open the shader menu and search for cave lighting, ambient lighting, or smooth lighting options.

Adjust Ambient Light Strength

Increasing ambient light makes caves brighter and easier to navigate without torches, but can reduce atmosphere. Decreasing it keeps caves darker and more challenging. Find the right balance for your playstyle—some players prefer caves to remain genuinely dark for survival challenge, while others want better visibility.

Control Light Propagation

Some settings affect how torchlight spreads through caves. Increasing light propagation distance means torches illuminate farther, making caves feel less claustrophobic. This also affects how block light interacts with shadows.

Test Your Settings

Dig a small cave or visit an existing one at night. Place torches and observe how light spreads. Adjust settings until caves feel appropriately lit for your preference—visible enough to navigate safely, but still atmospheric.
