Reduce Performance Impact While Keeping VHS Effects
Disable Unnecessary Features
Not all VHS effects are equally demanding. Access your shader settings and disable:
- Advanced scan lines: These detailed line artifacts consume extra processing power.
- Chromatic aberration: Color separation effects can be performance-heavy; toggle this off if needed.
- Complex flickering: Simplify the REC icon animation or reduce flicker frequency.
Lower Grain Resolution
Grain texture quality directly impacts performance. Reduce the grain resolution or sampling rate—the effect remains visible but requires less computation. You'll barely notice the difference visually.
Adjust Color Processing
Simplify color grading by reducing the number of color correction passes. This maintains the VHS aesthetic while cutting GPU load significantly.
Test on Different Hardware
Run the shader at various intensity levels and note your frame rate. Find the sweet spot where the retro effect remains noticeable but your game runs smoothly. Save this configuration as a performance preset.
Monitor Frame Rate
Use F3 debug screen to watch FPS while adjusting settings. Even modest reductions in grain intensity or flicker strength can yield noticeable performance gains without sacrificing the vintage camcorder feel.
