Enhance Visibility in Dark Caves and Underground Areas
Understand REM's Lighting Philosophy
REM Shaders softens shadows for a calming effect, but this can make caves feel too dark. The shader prioritizes atmosphere over visibility, so you may need to compensate.
Increase Ambient Light
In shader options, look for ambient light, ambient occlusion, or global illumination settings. Raising these values brightens shadowed areas without removing shadows entirely, making caves more navigable while keeping the cozy feel.
Boost Torch and Light Source Brightness
Some shader packs allow you to increase the brightness radius or intensity of held torches and placed light blocks. This helps you see further underground without changing the overall shader aesthetic.
Adjust Gamma or Brightness
If shader-specific options don't help enough, you can increase Minecraft's overall brightness in Video Settings. This affects the entire game but is a reliable fallback for visibility.
Use Strategic Lighting
Place more torches, lanterns, or glowstone in caves you frequent. REM's warm glow will make these light sources feel even more inviting, and you'll have better visibility as a bonus.
