Troubleshoot Server Lag and Performance Issues

Identify the Lag Source

Use /tps command (if available via plugins) to check server ticks per second. Lag below 20 TPS indicates problems. Check server logs for errors or warnings that point to specific plugins or features.

Reduce Entity and Mob Load

In purpur.yml, lower entity activation ranges and mob spawn rates. Disable unnecessary mob spawning in certain dimensions or reduce the maximum number of entities per chunk. This is often the primary cause of lag.

Optimize Chunk Loading

Adjust view-distance in server.properties to a lower value. Purpur's chunk loading optimizations in purpur.yml can also be tuned to process chunks more efficiently.

Check Plugin Performance

Disable plugins one at a time and restart to isolate problematic ones. Some plugins consume excessive resources—consider replacing them with lighter alternatives or removing unnecessary features.

Monitor Server Resources

Check your server's CPU, RAM, and disk usage. If RAM is full, increase allocation or reduce player limits. If CPU is maxed, reduce simulation distance or entity counts.

Apply Incremental Changes

Make one change at a time and test for 10-15 minutes before adjusting further. This helps identify which settings actually improve performance.
