Set Up Player Limits and View Distance
Locate Server Configuration
Open server.properties and purpur.yml in your server directory. These files control fundamental server limits and rendering distances.
Configure Maximum Players
In server.properties, find the max-players setting. Set this to a value your hardware can support—higher player counts increase CPU and memory usage. Consider your server's resources and network bandwidth when choosing this number.
Adjust View Distance
The view-distance setting in server.properties controls how many chunks players can see. Lower values (8-10) reduce lag on weaker servers, while higher values (12-16) provide better visibility. Purpur allows fine-tuning of chunk loading behavior in purpur.yml for additional optimization.
Test and Monitor
Restart your server after changes. Join with multiple players and monitor TPS (ticks per second) and server lag. If performance drops, reduce view distance or player limits incrementally.
Balance Gameplay and Performance
Remember that restrictive settings improve performance but may frustrate players. Find the sweet spot between stability and player experience for your community.
