How to Tell Whether Footsteps Are Coming From You or Another Player
Why it matters
On a server, footsteps are one of the few reliable audio cues that someone is nearby. Presence Footsteps plays sounds for every entity that moves, so a stray footstep behind you is worth investigating rather than ignoring.
Reading the cue
1. Turn on subtitles in Options > Music & Sound. Footstep events appear as text, and the direction arrow next to each entry tells you roughly where the sound came from.
2. Stand still and listen. Your own footsteps stop when you stop, so any continuing sound belongs to something else.
3. Sneak for a moment. Sneaking changes your own footstep sound, so if the sound you hear does not change, it is not you.
4. Compare the material. If you are on grass and you hear stone, the source is standing on a different block than you are, which usually means a different position.
Common false alarms
Mobs with their own movement sounds can be mistaken for players, and animals wandering onto hard blocks produce sharp clicks. Check the subtitle text before assuming a player is there. On servers with many players, expect overlapping footsteps and rely on direction rather than volume.
