How to Give a Player a New Role with the Player Roles Mod

Find the roles.json file

Open your server's config folder and locate roles.json. This file defines every role and the permissions attached to it. The everyone role is the baseline that all players always have and cannot be removed, so any role you create works as an override on top of it.

Create the role and assign it

Add a new entry for your role inside the JSON, giving it a name and the permission blocks you want (for example a commands section). Save the file, then reload it at runtime so you don't have to restart the server. Once the role exists, assign it to a specific player using the mod's role commands — the exact command name depends on your build, so check the command suggestions in chat by typing the base command and pressing tab.

Verify it worked

Have the player run a command that the role should now allow. If it still fails, confirm the role name in your assignment matches the JSON key exactly, and that the permission entry actually covers the command pattern you tested. Because overrides stack on top of everyone, a role can only add or change behavior — it never removes the default role.
