Use PBR Textures Effectively with Path-Traced Rendering

What PBR Textures Do in This Shader

PBR (Physically Based Rendering) textures define how blocks interact with light—whether they're rough, shiny, bumpy, or smooth. The path-traced lighting system uses this information to render realistic reflections and surface details. A polished block will reflect light sharply, while a rough block scatters it diffusely.

Identify PBR-Enhanced Blocks

Blocks like polished blackstone, amethyst, copper, and various ores typically have PBR support. Look for surfaces that appear to have depth, texture, or shine beyond the vanilla flat appearance. Water and wet surfaces also benefit significantly from PBR rendering, showing clear reflections.

Build with Material Variety

Mix different block types in your builds to showcase varied surface properties. Combine shiny blocks (like polished deepslate) with rough blocks (like cobblestone or dirt) to create visual contrast. The path-traced lighting will render each surface realistically based on its PBR properties.

Observe Reflections and Specularity

Smooth, shiny blocks will show clear reflections of the sky and surrounding blocks. Rough blocks will appear more matte. This creates natural visual hierarchy and makes builds feel more three-dimensional and realistic without changing the classic blocky Minecraft aesthetic.
