How to Diagnose Which Packet or NBT Error Is Crashing Your Game
Read the Log First
Before changing anything, find the actual error. Open your latest log file and search for terms like packet, NBT, VarInt, VarLong, payload, or too large. The line above the crash usually names the mod or block responsible.
Match the Error to the Cause
- NBT tag too big — a block or item is storing more data than allowed. Common with storage mods, backpacks, and machines holding many items.
- Badly compressed packet larger than maximum — a mod is sending a compressed payload that still exceeds the limit.
- VarInt or VarLong too big — a value is out of the expected range, often from a corrupted or extreme number in a machine or entity.
- Chunk packet memory — too many chunks or too much data per chunk are being sent at once.
Practical Response
1. Note the mod name from the log.
2. Empty or reset the block or item involved if you can reach it.
3. If the crash happens on world load, move away from the area or remove the offending block with an editor.
4. Keep Packet Fixer installed so the raised limits cover the remaining cases.
Verify the Fix
Repeat the exact action that crashed before. If it now completes, the limit was the problem. If it still crashes with the same line, the data itself is corrupt and must be cleared.
