Create a Downward Mob Trap Using Magma Blocks

Setup

Build a concealed downward whirlpool trap that pulls mobs down through a grate floor.

1. Place a magma block at the bottom of where you want the trap

2. Place a copper grate directly above the magma block

3. Fill the column above with water

4. Mobs and players will be pulled downward by the whirlpool effect through the grate

Practical Application

This is ideal for mob grinders where you need mobs to fall from an upper collection area. The copper grate hides the magma block while maintaining full downward bubble column functionality. You can stack multiple levels by repeating this pattern—place another magma block below, add a grate, and continue upward with water. The grate also provides a safe walkway for you to move around the trap without taking damage from the magma.
