Reading Damage Numbers Correctly
Understanding the Damage Indicator Display
When you hit an entity with a weapon or tool, a number will appear above or near the target showing the damage dealt. This number represents the total damage in half-hearts.
Interpreting Different Damage Values
The damage shown accounts for your weapon's base damage plus any enchantments or effects currently active. For example:
- A basic wooden sword will show lower numbers than an iron or diamond sword
- Critical hits (jumping while attacking) will display noticeably higher damage values
- Enchantments like Sharpness increase the displayed damage number
- Status effects like Strength will boost your damage output
Tracking Damage Over Time
Watch multiple damage indicators appear as you attack the same entity repeatedly. This helps you understand:
- How much damage your current weapon deals per hit
- Whether your enchantments are working effectively
- How your damage changes with different tools or weapons
- The effectiveness of status effects you've applied
The numbers fade quickly, so focus on the first few hits to get accurate readings. This is especially useful when testing new equipment or comparing different weapons.
