Create a Vaulted Ceiling with Stone Arches
Planning Your Vault
Vaulted ceilings use arches placed perpendicular to create a barrel-vault or groin-vault effect. Measure your room width and length, then select appropriate arch spans. Multiple 2x or 3x arches work best for large chambers.
Construction Method
1. Mark your grid: Decide spacing between arch lines—typically 3-4 blocks apart creates balanced proportions.
2. Build parallel arch lines: Place your first arch line across the room width. Repeat this pattern along the length, maintaining even spacing.
3. Connect with ribs (optional): Add decorative stone ribs or beams running perpendicular to emphasize the vault structure.
4. Fill ceiling gaps: Use limestone blocks or matching stone variants to fill spaces between arches for a unified ceiling.
5. Add capitals at supports: Place pillar capitals where arch lines meet supporting columns below.
Design Variation
For a groin vault, intersect two barrel vaults at right angles. This creates a dramatic cross-pattern and works beautifully in throne rooms or grand halls. Use contrasting stone materials to highlight the intersecting ribs.
