How to Stop Stuttering and Lag Spikes in Optimized FPS Modpack

Distinguish Stutter From Low FPS

Low FPS is a consistently low number. Stutter is a high average with periodic freezes. Press F3 and watch the frame time graph rather than just the FPS counter — spikes in frame time are what you actually feel. Note whether spikes happen when loading new chunks, when opening inventory, or randomly.

Fix Chunk-Loading Stutter

1. Reduce render distance so fewer chunks load at once.

2. Reduce simulation distance so fewer entities and block updates run.

3. Avoid flying or sprinting at high speed through unexplored terrain, which forces constant generation.

Fix Memory and Background Stutter

If spikes correlate with memory usage climbing and then dropping, your allocated memory is too low and the game is garbage collecting frequently. Increase allocation in modest steps and retest. If spikes happen regardless of location, close background programs competing for CPU and disk. Installing the game and your world saves on a solid-state drive rather than a mechanical drive removes a large class of loading hitches. Finally, make sure your operating system's power plan is set to a performance mode, since power-saving modes throttle the CPU mid-game and produce exactly this kind of periodic hitch.
