Track Chunk Loading and Generation Activity Across Dimensions

Why Monitor Chunk Generation

Chunk generation is resource-intensive and directly impacts server performance. Tracking generation rates helps you identify when players are exploring new areas and predict lag spikes.

Viewing Chunk Metrics

1. Open your Grafana dashboard and locate the chunk generation chart.

2. This chart displays world loading activity broken down by dimension, showing which areas are being actively generated.

3. The loaded chunks counter tells you the total number of chunks currently in memory.

4. High generation rates during peak player times may indicate exploration or new player activity.

Optimizing Based on Chunk Data

Use chunk metrics to make server decisions:

  • If generation spikes correlate with TPS drops, consider pre-generating key areas during low-traffic times.
  • Monitor specific dimensions separately—the Nether and End often generate differently than the Overworld.
  • Track trends over time to understand your player base's exploration patterns.
  • Combine chunk data with entity counts to see if mob spawning increases in newly generated areas.

This data helps you balance world expansion with server stability.
