Set Up Custom Metric Names and Prefixes for Your Monitoring System

Customizing Metric Identifiers

Metric naming affects how data appears in your monitoring tools. Proper naming makes dashboards easier to read and helps organize large datasets.

Configuring Metric Names

1. Edit your mod configuration and set instrumentation-name to a unique scope name—this identifies your server's metrics in OpenTelemetry.

2. Use metrics.prefix to add a starting text to all game metrics (for example, minecraft_server_ or my_server_).

3. Set metrics.counter-suffix to define what text is appended to counter-type metrics.

4. Enable strip-identifier-namespaces: true if you want cleaner, shorter metric names without default namespace prefixes.

Organizing Your Dashboard

Consistent naming helps when managing multiple servers:

  • Use prefixes to group related metrics together in Grafana.
  • Include your server name or environment in the instrumentation name for clarity.
  • Match your naming scheme to your organization's monitoring standards.
  • Test naming changes in a staging environment before applying to production.

Well-named metrics make troubleshooting faster and dashboards more intuitive.
