Monitor Your Server's Real-Time Performance with TPS and MSPT

Understanding TPS and MSPT

TPS (Ticks Per Second) and MSPT (Milliseconds Per Tick) are the core metrics for server health. TPS shows how many game ticks complete per second—a healthy server runs at 20 TPS. MSPT measures how long each tick takes; lower values mean better performance.

Setting Up Performance Monitoring

1. Ensure your OpenTelemetry Java Agent and this mod are installed alongside the Fabric helper extension.

2. Start your server and verify telemetry data is being sent to your OpenTelemetry collector.

3. Import the prebuilt Grafana dashboard into your monitoring account.

4. Navigate to the server performance overview panel to see live TPS and tick duration graphs.

5. Watch for TPS drops below 20—this indicates lag. Check MSPT spikes to identify which ticks are slow.

Troubleshooting Lag Spikes

When you spot performance dips:

  • Cross-reference the timestamp with chunk generation activity—world loading causes temporary lag.
  • Check the entity tracking dashboard to see if mob counts spiked in specific dimensions.
  • Review network traffic panels for unusual packet activity or connection surges.
  • Use the spark mod integration for deeper diagnostic details if available.

Regular monitoring helps you catch performance issues before players notice them.
