Survive Your First Night in the Random Layers

Prepare Before Dark Falls

Your first priority is shelter. Gather wood from the starting oak tree immediately—you'll need it for tools and a crafting table. Dig down a few blocks into the layer below and create a small enclosed chamber. This doesn't need to be fancy; a 3×3 hole with a ceiling is enough to keep mobs out.

Gather Essential Resources

Before nightfall, collect:

  • Stone (dig down past the grass layer)
  • Coal or wood for torches
  • Food (dig for seeds or hunt animals on the surface)

Place torches around your shelter interior to prevent mob spawning. Craft a wooden pickaxe so you can mine stone more efficiently.

Stay inside your shelter until morning. Use this time to craft a furnace, cook any raw meat you've collected, and plan your next layer descent. Don't venture into unknown layers at night—the random blocks mean you won't know what dangers lurk below until you dig into them.

Next Steps

Once day breaks, assess which layer is below you. If it's safe, continue downward. If mobs are spawning heavily, reinforce your shelter and gather more resources before going deeper.
