Build a Safe Base While Digging Down

Choose Your Base Location

You don't have to build at the very top. Find a layer that feels stable—one with mostly stone or solid blocks rather than random dangerous materials. Clear out a larger chamber than your emergency shelter, at least 5×5 blocks, so you have room to work.

Establish Core Structures

Build these essentials first:

  • Crafting table
  • Furnace for smelting ore
  • Chest for storage
  • Bed for sleeping and respawn point
  • Torches everywhere to prevent mob spawning

Expand Gradually

Add rooms as you gather resources: a mining storage area, a farm for food, a smelting room with multiple furnaces. Since you're confined to one chunk, build vertically or create multiple chambers at different depths.

Secure Your Shaft

Make sure your main descent route is well-lit and has railings or walls so you don't accidentally fall. Place torches on one side consistently so you can navigate back up easily. Consider building a ladder shaft alongside your mining shaft for quick escapes.
