Locating Ancient Cities and Strongholds

Reaching Deep Underground Structures

Ancient Cities and Strongholds still generate in the world, but without caves, accessing them requires intentional mining downward.

Finding Ancient Cities

Ancient Cities spawn deep underground in the Deep Dark biome. Dig straight down or use strip mining at the lowest Y-levels (around Y-level -51 and below). Listen for the distinctive ambient sounds of the Deep Dark biome—eerie whispers and echoing noises indicate you're close. Watch for sculk blocks, which signal the biome's presence.

Locating Strongholds

Strongholds generate in rings around the world center. Use Eyes of Ender to locate them—throw them and follow their flight path. They'll lead you toward the nearest Stronghold. Mine downward along their trajectory to intercept the structure underground.

Mining Safely

Always mine with caution when digging toward these structures. Bring adequate tools, food, and blocks to escape if you encounter hostile mobs or dangerous situations. Consider building a safe shaft with torches and platforms before exploring deep structures.
