How to Build a Safe Axolotl Habitat That Shows Off Variants

Choosing the right enclosure

Axolotls need water to survive and will dry out and die on land. Build a pool that is fully enclosed with solid blocks on the sides and a floor, then fill it with water source blocks. A depth of a few blocks gives them room to swim and lets you view them from the side through glass.

Making variants easy to see

1. Line the pool walls with glass so you can identify colors without entering the water.

2. Use light-colored floor blocks such as white concrete or quartz so darker variants like Dark and Cyanide stand out.

3. Avoid placing the pool in direct sunlight if you want to view Glowxolotl clearly — a dim or enclosed room makes its glow easier to notice.

4. Group variants by color in separate pools if you are collecting all ten, so you can confirm at a glance which ones you still need.

Keeping them healthy

Feed your axolotls buckets of tropical fish. They will also attack and eat small aquatic mobs, so do not stock the pool with fish you want to keep. Keep the water source blocks refreshed — if you break the floor or drain part of the pool, axolotls can end up on dry ground. Cover the top of the pool with a fence or glass ceiling if you are worried about them being pushed out during building work nearby.
