How to Get Breeding-Only Axolotl Variants

Understanding Breeding-Only Variants

Variants registered without .natural() are breeding-only. They never spawn naturally in the world, so you cannot find them in oceans or lush caves. The only way to obtain one is through axolotl breeding.

1. Obtain two axolotls whose combined genetics can produce the breeding-only variant. In vanilla axolotl breeding, the offspring's variant is chosen from the parents' variant pool, so you generally need at least one parent that carries the target variant in its breeding pool.

2. Feed each axolotl a bucket of tropical fish to put them in love mode. They will path toward each other and produce a baby.

3. Check the baby's variant. If it isn't the one you want, repeat with the same or different parents. Breeding outcomes are probabilistic, so multiple attempts may be needed.

Tips

Keep your breeding pair in a contained water area so they don't wander. Use a name tag or a labeled enclosure to track which axolotls carry which variant. If a breeding-only variant never appears, confirm the mod that adds it is loaded on both client and server, and that the variant was registered correctly. You can always verify a variant exists by trying to summon it with /summon.
