Design a Maze with Multiple Levels
Planning Your Layout
Sketch out your maze on paper before building. Use the yellow wallpaper walls as your primary structure, creating intersections, dead ends, and winding corridors. The repetitive texture helps players lose their sense of direction—a key Backrooms feature.
Adding Vertical Complexity
Use different floor heights to create multiple levels. Place yellow carpets and office tiles at varying elevations to force players to navigate up and down. Install fluorescent lights at each level to maintain visibility while keeping the atmosphere unsettling.
Creating Disorientation
Make hallways appear identical by repeating the same wall patterns and light placements. Add subtle variations—a blue tape door here, an air vent there—so players can't simply memorize the layout. Use blank walls strategically to create featureless sections that feel endless.
Escape Routes
Incorporate hidden passages or unexpected openings to reward exploration. Place these behind or beside standard wallpaper sections to make them feel like discoveries rather than obvious exits.
