Understanding the BlockDictionary System

What is the BlockDictionary?

The BlockDictionary is MelonLib's core grouping system for blocks, similar to how OreDictionary works for items. It allows mods to register blocks under shared categories, so different mods can recognize equivalent blocks without hardcoding specific block names.

How Blocks Get Grouped

When a mod using MelonLib registers a block, it assigns that block to one or more dictionary entries. For example, multiple mods might register their copper ore blocks under the same dictionary key. This means machines and recipes from any connected mod can accept *any* copper ore, not just a specific one.

Checking Which Dictionary a Block Belongs To

To see what dictionary entries a block has been assigned to, place the block in the world and use the mod's debug tools or check the mod's configuration files. Connected mods will list which dictionary keys they use in their own documentation.

Why This Matters

The BlockDictionary reduces mod conflicts and makes your world more flexible. You can swap out blocks from different mods and machines will still recognize them, as long as they share a dictionary entry.
