How to Set Up Group Inheritance (Parent and Child Groups)

Why inheritance matters

Rather than copying the same permissions into every group, you build a hierarchy. A default group holds baseline permissions, member inherits from default, vip inherits from member, and admin inherits from vip. Each level only adds what is new.

Linking groups

Use /lp group vip parent add member. Now vip inherits everything member has. Repeat up the chain: /lp group member parent add default, /lp group admin parent add vip. A group can have multiple parents, and LuckPerms merges their permissions.

Weight and priority

When two groups grant conflicting values for the same node, the higher-weight group wins. Set weight with /lp group vip setweight 50. Give staff groups higher numbers than donor groups so their decisions take precedence. Negative weights are allowed for punishment-style groups.

Checking the tree

Run /lp group vip info to see parents, children, weight, and the full list of inherited permissions. If something looks wrong, /lp user <name> permission info shows the effective permission map for a specific player, including which group supplied each node. Adjust parents rather than duplicating nodes — inheritance keeps your setup maintainable as the server grows.
