How to Check Light Levels for Mob-Proofing with Lighty Mod

The main reason players install a light overlay is to stop hostile mobs from spawning. Lighty Mod makes this easy by showing light levels directly on the ground.

Reading the Overlay

With the overlay active, walk through the area you want to check. In carpet mode, the transparent block changes appearance based on the light level at that spot. In number mode, you see the actual light value. In cross mode, a cross marks spots that are too dark. Any spot below the safe threshold can spawn hostile mobs at night or in dark conditions.

Fixing Dark Spots

Place torches, lanterns, or other light sources on the marked spots until the overlay no longer flags them. Re-check after placing each light, because a single torch can brighten several adjacent blocks. Pay special attention to corners, under overhangs, and inside enclosed rooms where light does not spread well.

Practical Workflow

1. Press F8 to enable the overlay.

2. Walk the perimeter of your base and note flagged blocks.

3. Place lights and watch the overlay update.

4. Press F8 again to hide the overlay when done.

This routine is much faster than placing and breaking blocks to test spawning manually, and it works in caves, mob farms, and village perimeters alike.
