Optimizing Performance on Low-End Hardware

Start with Shader Distance Settings

Open shader options and reduce render distance for shadows and lighting effects. Lower shadow distance is the quickest performance gain without sacrificing visual quality much.

Disable or Reduce Non-Essential Effects

Look for toggles to disable or minimize:

  • Bloom effect: Set to low or disable entirely if frame rate is critical.
  • Ambient occlusion: This subtle shadowing effect can be toggled off.
  • Volumetric lighting: If available, disable god rays or light shafts.
  • Sky effects: Fantasy sky rendering can sometimes be simplified.

Adjust Core Lighting Parameters

Reduce shadow softness and intensity—pixelated shadows at lower quality still look good and render faster. Lower overall lighting quality if available.

Monitor Frame Rate

Use F3 debug screen (Java Edition) to watch FPS while making changes. Lantern Shaders is designed for older systems, so even minimal settings should maintain playable frame rates. If still struggling, consider lowering your Minecraft render distance or reducing other mod complexity.
