How to Zoom Without the Spyglass Overlay or Black Bars

A common reason players install Just Zoom is to get spyglass-level magnification without the vignette and frame that the vanilla spyglass draws over your screen.

Why Just Zoom Avoids the Overlay

  • The vanilla spyglass applies a dark border and a circular mask when you use it. Just Zoom instead changes your field of view directly, so the entire screen stays visible while zoomed.
  • This makes it far better for spotting distant structures, reading signs from afar, or watching mobs without your peripheral vision being blocked.

Getting the Cleanest View

1. Hold your zoom key (default Z, or Y on some layouts) — no item needs to be in your hand.

2. Scroll the mouse wheel to push the zoom deeper than a spyglass would allow.

3. If you still see any transition animation you dislike, open the Spyglass settings button on the pause screen and disable smooth zooming for an instant, overlay-free snap.

Practical Tips

  • Because there's no overlay, you can keep your crosshair usable while zoomed — handy for aiming at distant targets.
  • Combine deep zoom with normalized sensitivity to line up long-range shots or scans without the camera jerking.
  • If a resource pack or shader adds its own zoom effect, disable it to avoid stacking two overlays.
