Create a Custom Entity Model from Scratch
Starting Your Model
You can build entity models entirely from scratch using either Blockbench or by writing JSON directly. Blockbench is recommended for beginners since it provides visual feedback.
Workflow
1. Open Blockbench and create a new model project
2. Set up the base bone structure (typically a root bone with child bones for body parts)
3. Model each part of your entity by adding cubes and positioning them
4. Apply textures and UV mapping to your model
5. Export as JSON when satisfied
6. Place the JSON file in your mod's designated model folder
Key Considerations
- Plan your bone hierarchy before building—parent bones should represent the main body, with limbs as children
- Keep texture dimensions consistent with Minecraft's standards
- Test rotation points carefully; they determine how parts move
- JsonEM converts your model into TexturedModelData, so ensure all bones are properly named and positioned
Start simple with basic shapes, then refine details. You can always reimport and edit your JSON file later if adjustments are needed.
