How to Highlight Items From Other Mods With Item Borders

Why Modded Items Need Tags

Modded items rarely share the vanilla naming you're used to, and typing every single ID by hand is tedious. The reliable approach is to use tags, which group many items under one name regardless of which mod added them. Many mods register their ores, ingots, dusts, and gems under common tags, so a single tag line can light up items from several mods at once.

Finding the Right Identifier

You need the exact registry name or tag for the item you want. The easiest way is to look at how the item is referenced elsewhere — in recipe viewers, in the mod's own config, or in the item's tooltip when advanced tooltips are enabled. Once you have the identifier, paste it into your Item Borders config exactly as written, including the namespace before the colon.

Building a Multi-Mod Rule

Create one rule per color, then list every item or tag you want in that color. For example, give all ores one color and all ingots another so players can scan a chest and instantly separate raw materials from processed ones. If a modded item doesn't appear under any shared tag, fall back to its individual registry name. Test after each addition, because a single misspelled namespace will silently drop that entry without breaking the rest of the file.
