Optimizing Water Reflections on Lower-End Hardware
Check Current Reflection Quality
Load into a world with a significant body of water—an ocean, lake, or river works well. Observe how the water surface reflects the sky, blocks, and light sources. If reflections cause noticeable lag or frame drops, adjustments are needed.
Reduce Reflection Detail
Access shader settings and find reflection or water-related options. Lower the reflection resolution or quality setting to reduce the computational load. This maintains the visual appeal of shiny surfaces while improving frame rates.
Balance Visual Fidelity
Test the changes by moving near water and looking at reflections from different angles. The goal is clean, visible reflections without stuttering. You may need to experiment with intermediate settings rather than minimum or maximum.
Monitor Performance
Use an FPS counter to track performance improvements. If reflections still impact your frame rate significantly, consider reducing other shader features like shadow distance or bloom intensity to compensate and maintain smooth gameplay.
