Optimizing Performance While Maintaining Atmospheric Quality
Reduce Shadow Render Distance
Shadows are computationally expensive. Lower the shadow distance setting to render shadows only near your character. This dramatically improves frame rates while keeping nearby areas atmospheric. Distant terrain will lose shadow detail, but the cinematic effect remains where you're actively playing.
Adjust Quality Presets
The shader typically offers preset options (low, medium, high). Start with a lower preset and gradually increase quality until you find the balance between visual atmosphere and smooth gameplay. The cinematic mood remains effective even at reduced shadow quality.
Disable Unnecessary Effects
Look for optional visual enhancements like bloom or ambient occlusion. Disabling these can provide significant performance gains without sacrificing the core Dying Light aesthetic. The shadow system itself is the primary visual feature.
Monitor Frame Rate
Use F3 debug display to watch your frame rate while adjusting settings. The shader should maintain playable performance on mid-range systems. If you experience stuttering, prioritize reducing shadow distance over other settings—it has the largest performance impact while keeping the atmosphere intact.
