Survive Your First Winter
Prepare Before Cold Sets In
Monitor the season indicator and begin preparations as autumn approaches. Gather wood, stone, and clay materials to build a sturdy shelter with a roof—this reduces heat loss during freezing nights. Construct a fireplace or furnace inside your shelter; keeping a fire burning is essential for maintaining body temperature when winter arrives.
Stock Food and Water
Hunt animals and farm crops during autumn to build food reserves. Store raw meat, vegetables, and grain in an underground cellar or cool storage area to prevent spoilage. Boil water and store it in containers—you'll need clean water throughout winter since snow and ice won't provide safe drinking sources.
Monitor Body Temperature
Wear appropriate clothing layers as temperatures drop. Stay near your fire during the coldest parts of winter nights. Eat warm, cooked meals regularly—hot food raises your core temperature more effectively than cold rations. If your temperature drops too low, you'll take damage and become vulnerable to illness.
Maintain Your Fire
Keep fuel (wood or charcoal) stockpiled near your fireplace. Don't let the fire go out during critical cold periods. Consider building multiple heat sources in different rooms if your shelter is large.
