Hunt and Butcher Animals Efficiently
Prepare for the Hunt
Craft or find a suitable weapon—a bow, spear, or blade depending on your current technology level. Wear protective gear to reduce damage from wild animals. Hunt during daylight when visibility is good and dangerous nocturnal creatures are less active.
Track and Kill Game
Look for animal tracks and droppings to locate herds. Approach from downwind when possible to avoid alerting prey. Different animals require different tactics: some are aggressive and will charge, while others flee. Aim for vital areas to minimize suffering and maximize meat yield.
Butcher Your Kill
Once an animal is dead, use a butchering knife or appropriate tool to process the carcass. The butchering skill improves with practice, and higher skill levels yield more usable meat and valuable byproducts like hides and bones. Don't waste organs and bones—they have crafting and cooking uses.
Cook and Preserve Meat
Cook raw meat immediately to prevent spoilage and foodborne illness. Store cooked meat in cool storage or smoke it for longer preservation. Properly prepared meat provides essential protein for maintaining strength and health.
