Paint Only Exposed or Underground Surfaces

Use Surface Filter Modes

Go Paint Advanced Plugin includes specialized filter modes that let you paint selectively based on what's around the target block. This prevents accidental recoloring and gives you precise control over which surfaces get painted.

Available Filter Modes

  • Overlay Brush: Colors only blocks that have open air directly above them. Perfect for painting grass, roofs, or terrain tops without touching buried blocks.
  • Underlay Brush: Paints only blocks with solid ground above them. Ideal for painting cave floors, underground structures, or hidden foundation layers.
  • Exposed Blocks Mode: Targets only blocks with at least one air-adjacent face, leaving enclosed blocks untouched.
  • Line of Sight Mode: Paints only blocks you can directly see, useful for detailed surface work.

Workflow

1. Open the brush menu (Left-click with wand)

2. Select your desired filter mode from the surface options

3. Choose your brush type and block palette

4. Right-click to paint—only qualifying blocks will be affected

These filters work across all brush types, so you can combine a Gradient brush with Overlay mode to create smooth color transitions on just the top surfaces of terrain.
