Understanding Totem Activation Mechanics
When the Totem Activates
Your Garfield totem automatically triggers when you take damage that would reduce your health to zero or below. This includes fall damage, mob attacks, fire, suffocation, drowning, and explosions. The totem must be in your offhand slot or main inventory—it won't work if stored in a chest or dropped on the ground.
What Happens After Activation
Once triggered, the totem grants temporary invulnerability and status effects. You'll be restored to half a heart of health with regeneration and fire resistance active, giving you time to escape or heal. The totem item is consumed and disappears—you'll need another one for the next close call.
Limitations to Remember
The totem only saves you from damage that would be fatal. It doesn't prevent the damage itself, just the death. You cannot activate multiple totems simultaneously—only one totem works per near-death event. Instant-kill effects that bypass normal damage may not trigger totem activation, so always prioritize avoiding such situations.
