How to Tell Trapped Chests Apart From Normal Chests

The Hidden Button Trick

With Fresh Animations Objects installed, trapped chests get a small 3D button tucked under the latch. This is the fastest way to spot a trap before you open it, especially on servers where players hide them in storage rooms.

How to Check a Chest Safely

1. Stand a couple of blocks back and look at the front face of the chest, right below the latch where the lid meets the body.

2. On a normal chest the area is flat. On a trapped chest you will see a tiny raised button shape.

3. Compare side by side if you are unsure — place a known normal chest next to a suspicious one and look at both latches.

4. If you still cannot tell, break the chest with an axe and check the drop, or open it from a distance with a hopper underneath so a redstone signal cannot reach you.

Why This Matters

Trapped chests emit a redstone signal when opened, which is how most hidden trap setups trigger. Being able to identify them visually means you can avoid pressure-plate ambushes, TNT traps, and piston doors wired to storage. The button is purely cosmetic, so it does not change how the chest functions — it just gives you a visual tell.
