Getting Better Shadows Without Losing Frames

Understand Shadow Trade-offs

Shadows are the most demanding feature in For the Real Potatoes Shaders. Higher shadow quality means more detail but more processing power needed. The mod lets you find a middle ground.

Adjust Shadow Distance

In Shader Options, look for Shadow Distance or Shadow Range. Reduce this to limit how far shadows render from your character. Shadows close to you will remain detailed while distant shadows disappear, saving performance.

Shadow Softness Settings

If available, lower shadow softness or blur. Sharper shadows require less computation than soft, blurred ones. This trade-off is barely noticeable but helps frame rates significantly.

Test Different Levels

Start with medium shadow quality and test in various locations—forests, caves, and open areas. You'll quickly find the sweet spot where shadows look good and your frame rate stays playable. Remember: this shader prioritizes performance, so even low shadow settings will improve your lighting over vanilla Minecraft.
