How to Reduce Crafting-Related Network Traffic on a Server

Where the traffic comes from

In vanilla, the crafting screen sends a packet to the server every time a slot in the crafting grid changes, and the recipe book sends its own stream of data. On a busy server with many players crafting, this adds up. Fast Workbench lowers this by sending a packet only when it is actually needed, and by disabling the recipe book in the vanilla workbench so it stops transmitting.

What you can do as a player

1. Do your bulk crafting at a vanilla crafting table rather than in the 2x2 player inventory grid, since the mod only optimizes the vanilla workbench.

2. Avoid rapidly shuffling items in and out of the crafting grid; place your ingredients once and then shift-click the output.

3. If you were using the recipe book purely out of habit, stop opening it in the workbench, since it is disabled there anyway.

What you can do as a server operator

  • Make sure the mod is installed on both the client and the server so the reduced packet behavior is consistent.
  • Encourage players to craft in batches at a workbench rather than one item at a time in their inventory.
  • Note that modded crafting stations are not covered by this mod; if a modded station is causing traffic, that is a separate issue to investigate.

Limitation to remember

The 2x2 player crafting grid is not optimized by this mod, so crafting there still behaves like vanilla.
