How to Reach and Build On a Floating Island
Floating Islands generate high in the sky, usually above forests, plains, and mountains. They are rewarding but awkward to reach without preparation.
Reaching the Island
1. Craft plenty of scaffolding, dirt, or cobblestone before you start. A pillar-and-bridge approach is the most reliable early method.
2. Build up from directly below the island, then bridge across to its underside or edge.
3. Alternatively, use an elytra with fireworks, a stack of ender pearls, or a slow-falling potion to glide up from a nearby hill.
4. Check the island's underside first — some islands have exposed ore or a small cave entrance before you even land on top.
Settling In
- Light the entire surface immediately. Islands are isolated and mobs will spawn on any dark block.
- Build a railing or wall around the edge before you start construction; one misstep is fatal.
- Bring a water bucket for emergency landings and a bed to set your spawn.
- If you dislike islands appearing in your world, the official NoMoreFloatingIslands datapack disables their generation — but it only affects newly generated chunks, not existing ones.
A floating island makes an excellent base: no ground mobs, great views, and easy elytra launches.
