Optimize Performance While Maintaining Horror Atmosphere
Identify Performance-Heavy Settings
Fog and shadow rendering are typically the most demanding features in horror shaders. If you're experiencing frame rate drops, start by slightly reducing fog density and shadow depth—these have the biggest visual and performance impact.
Disable Non-Essential Effects
Film grain and light flicker are less demanding than fog and shadows but still consume resources. If performance is critical, try disabling these effects first while keeping the core darkness and fog that define the mod's atmosphere.
Lower Shadow Quality
Instead of just reducing shadow depth, check if there's a shadow quality or resolution setting. Lowering shadow resolution can significantly improve performance while maintaining the crushing darkness effect.
Test and Iterate
Make one change at a time and play for several minutes to gauge the impact on both visuals and frame rate. This helps you understand which settings matter most for your system. You may find that reducing fog by just 10-15% gives you a major performance boost without sacrificing the horror feel significantly.
