Pre-load World Data to See Unexplored Chunks from a Distance

Understand Pre-loading

Distant Horizons Backport can load chunk data from your world files without you traveling there. This lets you see distant, unvisited terrain as low-detail terrain in the background.

Enable World File Loading

In the mod settings, find the option to load world data or enable chunk pre-loading. This feature reads your world's region files and renders them as distant terrain automatically.

Watch Terrain Appear

Once enabled, fly to high ground or a tall structure and look toward unexplored areas. You should see distant terrain appear in the background, even if you haven't visited those chunks yet. The terrain will show as simplified block representations.

Manage Performance

Pre-loading large areas can impact startup time and memory usage. If you experience lag, disable this feature or limit it to specific regions. You can usually configure which areas to pre-load through the mod's settings menu.

Explore with Confidence

With pre-loaded terrain visible, you can plan your exploration routes and spot interesting landmarks before traveling there.
