How to Change Leaf Render Layers in Cull Less Leaves

Finding the setting

Cull Less Leaves exposes its behavior through the mod's own config screen rather than through vanilla video settings. Open your mod list, locate Cull Less Leaves, and click its config button. If you use a config library screen, the leaf options appear there. The key value you are looking for controls how many leaf layers get rendered before the mod stops drawing the hidden inner ones.

Choosing a value

  • Lowest layer count: only the outermost leaf surface is drawn. This is the most aggressive mode and gives the biggest FPS gain, but canopies look thin and you may see through trees from certain angles.
  • Middle values: a few layers are kept, so dense foliage still reads as solid while interior blocks are skipped. This is the usual sweet spot for survival worlds.
  • Highest value: closest to vanilla appearance, smallest performance gain.

Applying and testing

After changing the value, close the config and reload your world or press the keybind that reloads chunks if one is provided. Walk into a forest or a mangrove swamp and watch your FPS counter. If leaves flicker or you see sky through a canopy you dislike, raise the layer count by one step. If performance is still poor, lower it. The change is client-side, so you can tune it per machine without touching the server.
