Getting the Best FPS from Cull Less Leaves

Pair it with the right mods

Cull Less Leaves is designed to complement Sodium-style rendering mods. Install your renderer of choice first, then Cull Less Leaves, and make sure the leaf mod's config is actually being applied. If you run a renderer that already culls leaves, check for overlap; running two leaf-culling solutions at once can cause odd visuals without extra speed.

Tune for your hardware

  • On weak GPUs, set the leaf layer count to its lowest value and enable the most performance-oriented mode.
  • On mid-range systems, use a middle layer count. You keep most of the visual density and still skip interior blocks.
  • On strong systems, raise the layer count; you will still gain FPS in dense biomes compared to vanilla, just less dramatically.

Test in the right places

Do not benchmark in open plains. Go to a mangrove swamp, jungle, or a large custom forest, since those are where leaf rendering dominates. Stand still, note your FPS, change one setting, and compare. Change only one option at a time so you know what helped.

Other wins

Lower your render distance slightly, disable fancy leaves if your renderer offers it, and reduce particle-heavy settings. These stack with leaf culling and often matter more than fine-tuning the layer count.
